Ed Brown was another 1911 pistolsmith who began customizing his own pistols for IPSC competition. Ed was a good shooter and often finished in the “top 16” when the Nationals used to have a shoot-off. Ed began in his one-man shop, Ed’s Gun Shop, in Perry, Mo. He built a reputation for high quality, but came to national attention and the cover of American Handgunner with his Maxi-Comp. In the 1983-1987 period, the .45 ACP was the dominant cartridge used in practical shooting, so most of Ed’s Maxi-Comps were built in this cartridge. This pistol is a scarce full-house Maxi-Comp, built on a Colt Gold Cup, with acid-etched engraving, and appears to be unfired.
As was typical on Gold Cups with their larger rear sight base, Ed installed a Wichita rear sight instead of Bo Mar, which was not large enough to fill a Gold Cup’s slide cutout. Every option is included on this full-house Maxi-Comp with a two-tone finish of an electroless nickel lower and blue slide. The hand cut checkering is extensive with 20 lpi front strap, mainspring housing, front of the trigger guard, and 30 lpi checkering of the underside of trigger guard. Custom mag well, extended mag release button, Swenson ambi safety, this is as good as a Brown Maxi-Comp gets, a rare find in mint condition.
