James E. Clark Sr. was a legendary pistolsmith, champion bullseye shooter and innovative pistolsmith. He and Ron Power founded the American Pistolsmith Guild. Clark Custom Guns was founded in 1950 after Jim won the U.S. National Pistol Championship. Jim is the only person to win both the APG’s Pistolsmith of the Year Award and the Outstanding American Handgunner Award. As a bullseye shooter, from the very beginning the Louisiana-based pistolsmith tuned 1911 pistols for accuracy. His innovations included the first ramped barrel for a 1911and then, in the early 1960s, Heavy Long Slide models with Bo Mar ribs, like the pistol presented here. In mint condition, this Clark Custom 1911 features 20 lpi handcut checkering which itself is somewhat unusual as Clark was famous for his “tiger tooth” stippling of the front strap. The flat mainspring housing is also checkered at 20 lpi. The front of the dustcover incorporates Clark’s unique “slide tightener” with two set screws to varying the amount of pressure of the slide onto the frame rails. This is an accurate pistol capable of the X-ring at 50 yards, 1.5 inches. The supply of Heavy Long Slides was long ago exhausted, and Bo Mar is out of business, so this Clark bullseye gun cannot be duplicated today although Clark Custom Guns is still thriving.
