Bill Laughridge of Cylinder & Slide Shop took issue with the claim that a Para-Ordnance could not be properly customized because the frame’s investment casting was too porous to allow for checkering and overall poor quality of the pistol made it impossible to rectify. The jovial Nebraska-based pistolsmith challenged Cameron Hopkins when he was editor of American Handgunner to send him a Para and he’d prove it could make into a very nice custom 1911. His only condition was that fine checkering be applied to prevent cutting too deeply into the front strap, resulting in shallow 30 lpi.
With the checkering cut finely enough to avoid any casting flaws, the rest of the pistol came together magnificently. Bill fit a Bar Sto match barrel and buried Bo Mar rear sights mated to a gold bead front sight. The front of trigger guard and a flat mainspring housing were also finely checkered. The gun is finished in electroless nickel finish. Not many full-house Paras were built by any of the top names, so here’s a chance to add one to your collection from one of the best of all time, Bill Laughridge
